A Pregnancy Osteopath can be helpful during pregnancy, but have you considered it before?

It is common place for women to consider pregnancy massage as an adjunct during pregnancy. This is usually to help them remain mobile and comfortable during their pregnancy. We will also look at when Osteopathy might be an appropriate treatment option to consider.

So how can a Pregnancy Osteopath help during pregnancy?

Well, during pregnancy the body goes through a lot of changes. As your baby grows during pregnancy, your center of gravity shifts. This in turn, places strain on different joints. In addition to this, pregnancy hormones are release, which have an influence on your ligaments. This causes them to stretch further that they usually would. This is designed to help to body stretch during labour, so it shouldn’t be considered a bad thing. The only downside is that it can cause extra movement in your joints. This can create over stretching and strain as your pregnancy progresses.

The goal with Osteopathic treatment during this time, is to assist to body in adjusting to these changes. This is so that you remain as comfortable as possible during your pregnancy.

This combination of events can lead to common complaints seen during pregnancy, such as low back pain & pelvic pain, sciatica, headaches, neck & shoulder pain, fluid retention & cramps. These are common complaints that a Pregnancy Osteopath assists with all the time. The goal with Osteopathic treatment during this time, is to assist to body in adjusting to these changes, This is so that you remain as comfortable as possible during your pregnancy.

But what about after your have had your baby? Do I still need a Pregnancy Osteopath?

At Body & Brain, we always recommend our clients visit for a treatment as soon as possible after the birth of their baby. It is preferable to visit within the first few weeks. Every delivery is different. However, the body undergoes a tremendous amount of stress during the birthing process, so the sooner this can be addressed, the better chance your body has to heal itself efficiently.

Osteopathy can also be helpful for pain associated with caring for your child. Carrying, feeding and placing your baby into their pram and cot can place strain on the body. Osteopathy can help with pain associated with these activities and be a suitable treatment choice to assist with common conditions seen in mothers with newborns, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, neck & upper back pain, numbness, headaches and back pain.
